SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU forward Destiny Mitchell has been named the SoCon Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Western Carolina guard Ace Easter has been named the CRONS Freshman of the Week for games of Jan. 17-19, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Mitchell led the Bucs with 15.0 points per game and 13.0 rebounds per game with two double-doubles in two conference wins over the past week. The senior shot 56.0 percent (14-for-25) from the field and added five steals, three assists and three blocks over the two contests.
Mitchell totaled 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting with 14 rebounds, including five offensive boards, in ETSU’s win over Wofford on Saturday. She followed with 14 points and 12 rebounds, including five offensive, on Monday night as ETSU edged Mercer, 72-70, to improve to 5-0 in conference play.
The native of Bluffton, Ga. currently leads the conference in rebounding at 9.3 per game while placing in the top 15 in scoring. Mitchell claims the weekly honor for the first time in her first season in the SoCon.
Easter scored a career-high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting (69.2 percent) with five rebounds, four steals and two assists in the Catamounts’ lone contest last week, a 70-49 win over UNCG on Saturday.
The rookie is averaging 9.0 points per game in conference games this season, which ranks tied for 22nd among all players and fourth among all freshmen. The native of Catawba, N.C. earns the weekly honor for the first time this season.
