Bio

He grew up in Nacogdoches, Texas, and decided to attend Furman University on an athletic scholarship. That choice set the stage for Clint Dempsey to become one of today’s most recognizable names in the sport of soccer.

As a Paladin midfielder, Dempsey was named Freshman of the Year in the Southern Conference in 2001 and earned the first of three straight All-Conference honors. He finished his Furman career with 53 points in 62 games and led his team to two league championships.

He entered the ranks of professional and international soccer in 2004 and has become a standout on the United States national team. He currently ranks second in career goals and points in U.S. history and has been a starter on two World Cup teams. His goal gave the United States a 1-1 tie vs. England in the 2010 World Cup. He is presently the captain of the American squad that will compete in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Dempsey has been named the U.S. Soccer Male Athlete of the Year on three different occasions. He is currently a member of the Seattle Sounders of the MLS. He was inducted into the Furman Hall of Fame in 2008.
