Bio
For more than 40 years, Eddie Cameron was a critical part of the longstanding success of the Duke University athletic program.
After serving as an assistant basketball coach for the Blue Devils, Cameron was named head coach in 1929 and remained in that position until 1942. He guided Duke to two Southern Conference championships and captured three SoCon tournaments. His teams won 70 percent of their games over those 14 years.
With the onset of World War II, Cameron replaced fellow Hall of Famer Wallace Wade as Duke’s head football coach and won three Southern Conference championships. His 1944 team earned a trip to the Sugar Bowl, where the Blue Devils defeated Alabama, 29-26.
In 1940, Duke opened a new basketball arena designed after sketches done by Cameron and Wade on a matchbook cover. That facility is now known as Cameron Indoor Stadium. Eddie Cameron went on to serve as Duke’s Athletic Director until 1972. He passed away in 1988 at the age of 86.
