SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman guard Whitney Bunn has been named the SoCon Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Samford forward Destiney Elliott has been named the CRONS Freshman of the Week for games of Dec. 2-8, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Bunn led Furman to three wins over the past week, averaging 19.0 points per game, 9.0 assists per game and 4.9 rebounds per game. The sophomore guard totaled 17 points and a league-best 15 assists against Coastal Carolina last Wednesday for her second double-double of the season. She followed that performance with a team-high 26 points in an 84-79 win over former SoCon foe Appalachian State. Bunn then concluded the three-game stretch with 14 points, seven assists and six rebounds on Monday against North Greenville. The native of Bunn, N.C. leads the SoCon in assists (70), assists per game (7.0) and assist to turnover ratio (1.6), while ranking ninth in points per game (13.0). She is also the only player in the SoCon to have double-digit assists in a game this season, which she has accomplished twice. The weekly honor is the first of Bunn’s career after twice being named CRONS Freshman of the Week last season.
Elliott averaged 10.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in two contests for the Bulldogs last week. The rookie put together the best game of her short career with 15 points and nine rebounds against cross-town rival UAB last Saturday. She went 4-of-7 (.571) from the floor for the game while going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Elliott also added five points, four assists, three steals and three rebounds at Troy earlier in the week. The native of Oneonta, Ala. is averaging 7.0 rebounds per game this season, which ranks eighth in the SoCon and second among all SoCon freshmen.
