SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer guard Precious Bridges has been named the SoCon Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Chattanooga guard Keiana Gilbert has been named the CRONS Freshman of the Week for games of Nov. 25 - Dec. 1, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Bridges averaged 26.3 points per game over three contests last week, highlighted by her career-high 43-point performance against Saint Louis on Friday. The senior scored the final 15 points of regulation and all nine of Mercer’s overtime points to lead the Bears to an 80-75 overtime victory over the Billikens. She also added nine rebounds and a team-high five assists in the game. Bridges had a then-season-high 28 points and 10 rebounds against Tennessee Tech earlier in the week for her first double-double of the season. The native of West Palm Beach, Fla. leads the SoCon in scoring at 24.3 points per game, over five points higher than the next closest competitor.
Gilbert grabbed her second straight weekly honor after averaging 21.0 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per game with a .621 (18-of-29) field goal percentage in two games last week. The rookie led the Mocs with a career-high 27 points in the 67-63 upset win over No. 4 Tennessee last Wednesday. She was named ESPNW National Player of the Week on Monday, in part for her performance against the Lady Vols. Gilbert then totaled 15 points against Arkansas State on Monday night, while shooting .700 (7-of-10) from the field. The native of Columbia, Tenn. ranks sixth in the conference in scoring at 14.0 points per game and fourth in field goal percentage at .513 and leads all freshmen in both categories.
