SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference Sports Media Association selected its 2013 women’s basketball all-conference teams and postseason awards today (March 6). Davidson’s Sophia Aleksandravicius was selected as Player of the Year, while Chattanooga head coach Wes Moore was named Coach of the Year. 

Aleksandravicius finished the regular season leading the league in rebounds (9.9), blocked shots (2.8), defensive rebounds (7.2) and finished third in scoring (15.8 ppg). The Pound Ridge, NY native was also named the Preseason Player of the Year, and was also voted Player of the Year in the coaches’ poll.

Moore, who was also chosen by his peers as Coach of the Year, is in his 15^th year at Chattanooga and guided the Lady Mocs to their 18^th conference regular-season title and a No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. Moore led the Lady Mocs to a 26-3 overall record and a 19-1 conference record, closing the season on a 16-game win streak. Chattanooga also recorded one of the biggest wins in school history, defeating No. 20 Tennessee, 80-71, to open the 2012-13 season.

UNCG’s Lucy Mason was selected as the Freshman of the Year. She was the conference’s highest freshman scorer, averaging 12.5 ppg. Mason started all 29 games for the Spartans this season and lead the team in minutes, playing in an average of 33.2 minutes per game.

Along with Aleksaondravicius, Anna Freeman (Appalachian State), Ali Ford (Elon), Kayla Christopher (Chattanooga) and Ashlen Dewart (Chattanooga) were named first-team all-conference by the media.

Maryah Sydnor (Appalachian State), Laura Murray (Davidson), Kelsey Evans (Elon), Jazmine Martin (Samford), and Daniella Motley (Wofford) were selected for the second team.

Alon with Mason, Dakota Dukes (Davidson), Holli Wilkins (Furman), Tatianna Jackson (Chattanooga), and Lindsay Simpson (Western Carolina) were named to the all-freshman team.

The 2013 Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament begins Friday, March 8 at 11:30 a.m. at Kimmel Arena in Asheville, N.C. The championship game is scheduled for Monday, March 11 at 3:00 p.m.
