Women's Basketball Weekly Awards Announced

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Davidson guard Laura Murray has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Samford’s Ellen Riggins  was selected as the CRONS Freshman of the Week for the week of Dec. 3, the league office announced Tuesday.

Murray earns SoCon Player of the Week honors after averaging 20.5 points, five rebounds and four assists for Davidson last week. She scored 21 points in Davidson’s 86-63 loss to NC State on Tuesday. The senior guard scored 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, while tying her career best with seven assists to go with a season-high-tying five steals in a 78-74 Wildcat win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday. Murray finished the week shooting 48.1 percent, including 50 percent from behind the arc, to lead the Wildcats. She has scored 20-plus points in five of Davidson’s eight games this year and has topped 20 points 22 times in her career.

Riggins earns her second CRONS Freshman of the Week award with her performance last week. The freshman scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds in a 57-52 loss to Rice on Friday before posting nine points and six rebounds again in Samford’s 70-49 victory over South Alabama on Saturday.

Also nominated for Player of the Week were: Appalachian State’s KeKe Cooper, Elon’s Shannen Cochraham, Furman’s Holli Wilkins, Georgia Southern’s Lacie Dowling, UNCG’s Janae’ Stevenson, Chattanooga’s Taylor Hall, Samford’s Krista Stricklin and Western Carolina’s Rena Wakama.

Also nominated for CRONS Freshman of the Week was UNCG’s Bailey Williams.
