SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga forward Ashlen Dewart has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Furman’s Whitney Bunn was selected as the CRONS Freshman of the Week for the week of Dec. 17, the league office announced Tuesday.
Dewart earns her sixth career Player of the Week award after averaging 20 points and 7.7 rebounds per game in three Chattanooga wins last week, shooting 69 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from the 3-point line (5-of-7). The senior forward recorded a pair of double-doubles in UTC’s wins over Jacksonville State and Elon. She had a season-high 29 points and 10 rebounds against the Phoenix. Against Jacksonville State, she finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds, going 3-of-4 from the 3-point line. She scored six points and grabbed three rebounds in the Mocs’ win over UNCG.
Bunn earns her first CRONS Freshman of the Week honor after helping Furman to a 79-72 win over Coastal Carolina on Sunday. She returned from a foot injury to score 12 points, including two 3-pointers in the final 10 minutes, to help push the Paladins to victory. Bunn also grabbed four rebounds and dished out four assists in the win.
Also nominated for Player of the Week were Georgia Southern’s Anna Claire Knight, Samford’s Shelby Campbell and Wofford’s Jordan Frazier.
Also nominated for CRONS Freshman of the Week were Elon’s Jennifer Rhodes, Chattanooga’s Aryana Gilbert and Samford’s Lydia McGee.
