2012 Southern Conference Hall of Fame Inductee

Bio

Angie Barker's accomplishments as a shot putter remain among the most remarkable in the annals of Southern Conference track & field. Although she last threw the shot for ETSU in 1989, she remains the conference's record-holder in that event.

In her two seasons in the conference, the Tennessee native was dominant, winning the shot put consecutively at the SoCon indoor championship meets in 1988 and 1989. She also captured the title in the outdoor championship in '89. Her best indoor mark of 54-feet, 6 inches is still the conference's gold standard in the event.

Barker was recognized as an All-American during each of her two indoor seasons at ETSU. As a junior, she won the NCAA's indoor shot put championship. That same year, she was named a national Strength & Conditioning All-American.

As the NCAA slogan goes, she turned professional in another field, entering a career in education, and teaches in the public school system in the eastern part of Tennessee. Angie Barker was inducted into the East Tennessee State Hall of Fame in 1998.
