The extraordinary abilities of Arnold Palmer first became known to the public during his time as a student at Wake Forest University. As a freshman, he won the 1948 Southern Conference golf tournament, then repeated as a sophomore. He was a key part of the Demon Deacons' only SoCon golf championship in 1950.
Palmer won NCAA Tournament individual titles in both 1949 and 1950. After returning to Wake Forest for his senior year, he captured the U.S. Amateur championship in 1954.
He went on to become one of the greatest professional golfers in history, winning 62 PGA events. He won seven major tournaments, including four green jackets at the Masters.
He was voted the PGA Player of the Year twice and was elected to the PGA Hall of Fame in 1980. Perhaps more than anything else, Palmer was credited with bringing professional golf to the national forefront during the beginning of the television era with a loyal following dubbed Arnie's Army.
