Softball Results from Wednesday Print Elon 2, Appalachian State 1ELON, N.C. - Christina Melton launched a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning - the lone Phoenix hit of the contest - to lift Elon to a 2-1 Southern Conference softball victory over Appalachian State Wednesday afternoon at East Field, completing a three-game season series sweep of the Mountaineers.The win marked the 10th in 11 games and fourth in a row for the Phoenix (15-4-1 overall, 3-0 Southern Conference), who claimed a doubleheader from Appalachian State (6-12, 0-3) - 1-0 and 8-0 - on Tuesday afternoon. After turning in a 20-25-1 record last season, Elon is off to its best start during its five-year tenure at the NCAA Division I level.Melton's homer - her sixth of the season and 11th of her career - ended a hitless gem hurled by Mountaineers pitcher Jennifer Hurley (2-6), who had fanned six batters and walked only a pair in the game's first eight innings. The blast moved Melton up to a third-place tie with teammate Jamie Dupont on Elon's career home run list and gave her sole possession of sixth on the season home run chart. Whitney Meeks (7-1) worked the last two frames in the circle for the Phoenix, allowing just one hit. She relieved starter Meredith Gay (four hits in four and 1/3 innings) and Jennifer Lamb (three hits and three strikeouts in two and 2/3 innings).Appalachian State, which out-hit Elon 8-1 but committed all three of the game's errors, stranded nine base runners to four for the Phoenix. The Mountaineers claimed a 1-0 edge in the top of the sixth inning when Diana Cook singled to left field, scoring Christa Hicks from second base.Elon evened the score in the bottom of the seventh. Lori Notaro reached on an error by Hicks at shortstop, advancing pinch runner Suzanne Speed from second base to third. Speed then scurried across home plate after an error by ASU catcher Sarah Gough to force extra frames.Cook (2-for-4, RBI, double) and teammate Lindsay Glover (2-for-3, SH, SB) registered the lone multi-hit outings of the day. Both the Mountaineers and the Phoenix return to action this weekend in the Elon Phoenix Classic at Burlington City Park, Friday-Sunday.Georgia Southern 5, Charleston Southern 1Georgia Southern 7, Charleston Southern 4CHARLESTON, SC - Georgia Southern scored four runs in the final two innings of the second game of a doubleheader with Charleston Southern, winning, 7-4, to complete a sweep of the Buccaneers on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles won game one, 5-1. Georgia Southern improved to 10-6 on the season while Charleston Southern drops to 8-16 overall. Georgia Southern has defeated CSU four times this season.Cary Moone allowed five hits and struck out 11 in game one and Lindsay Jones had two RBI to pace the offensive attack for Georgia Southern. CSU freshman Alison McAteer took the loss in game one, allowing three earned runs in four innings. Senior second baseman Jen Foster had a triple and scored CSU's lone run in game one.In game two, senior Kelly Backert had two hits and two RBI but that was not enough as Georgia Southern won the game late. CSU also got two hits each from Jacqui Mines and Beth Wolfsen. Freshman Amanda Noble took the loss for CSU, allowing five runs(three earned) in five innings, striking out eight.Leading the way for Georgia Southern in game two were Maria Laurato and Tiffany Urena with two hits each. (Mar. 10, 2004) - East Tennessee State sophomores Belinda Barrera (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Courtney Jenkins (Knoxville, Tenn.) pitched complete-game shutouts Wednesday, as the Buccaneers swept Monmouth in a doubleheader from Kiwanis Park. ETSU remains a perfect 4-0 at home this season and jumps to 10-11 overall. Meanwhile, the Hawks drop to 1-4.Barrera shined in game one, allowing just one hit in seven innings of work. She retired the first seven batters she faced prior to giving up her lone walk of the afternoon to Monmouth's Danielle Ellement. Barrera had a no-hitter going until Kristin Wilson beat out a dribbler to ETSU third baseman Lindsay Lane (Erwin, Tenn.) with two outs in the top of the sixth. With the win, Barrera improves to 3-2 in the circle and lowered her season ERA to 1.37.East Tennessee State took an early 4-0 lead after scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and another two in the second. Lane, who went 3-for-3 at the plate including two runs and an RBI, blasted a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth, which proved be more than enough insurance for the Buccaneers. Sophomores Janine Sprague (Hillsborough, N.C.) and Jessica Lonsinger (Dale City, Va.) and junior Mary Beth Hazelwood (Knoxville, Tenn.) also collected multiple hits for ETSU.Again the Buccaneers got the offense going early in game two, scoring all three of their runs in the bottom half of the first. Sprague and freshman Stephanie Gaynord (Manassas, Va.) led off with back-to-back singles followed by a two-run double by junior Danielle Spetar (Knoxville, Tenn.). Spetar advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored on an RBI single by Lane.Jenkins (1-5) took care of the rest by hurling a five-hit shutout in collecting her first victory of the season. She struck out six.Wilson led the Hawks with a 2-for-4 performance. Ashley Dellens, Breanna Steins, and Tiffany Kenney also scattered basehits. Starting pitcher Angela Rand gave up six hits in six complete innings. She walked two and all three of her runs were eanred.East Tennessee State gets back into tournament action this weekend. The Buccaneers travel to Rock Hill, S.C. for the 2004 Ringor Invitational hosted by Winthrop. ETSU will open play against Central Florida this Friday, Mar. 12. The tournament will conclude on Sunday, Mar. 14.Coastal Carolina 5, UNC Greensboro 3 (8)UNC Greensboro 3, Coastal Carolina 2CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina earned a split of a doubleheader with UNC Greensboro, Mar. 10, winning the opener 5-3 in eight innings and dropping the nightcap, 3-2. Coastal is now 6-11 on the year, while the Spartans move to 13-5. UNCG got on the board first on Jennifer Bonilla's home run in the top of the second. However, the Lady Chanticleers answered in the bottom of the third with three runs of their own. After Brittany Nelson led off with a double down the right field line and was sacrificed to third, Delane Oscarson had the first CCU home run of the season, putting it over the fence in right center for a 2-1 lead. Sara Hostetler followed with a double to left field and eventually scored on Diana Mendez's single down the right field line for a 3-1 lead. The Spartans tied the game up on a pair of unearned runs in the top of the sixth. After singles by Jennifer Hubbard and Stephanie Witt, Danielle Byrne's ground ball ended in an error, scoring Hubbard. Kara Clouser then singled to left to score Witt and knot the game at three. In the eighth with the international tiebreaker, UNCG got their runner over to third with two down but couldn't push the run across. Coastal's Katey Allen came in to pinch run and was sacrificed to third on a bunt by Diana Mendez. However, it turned out to be a non-factor, as Kelly Feely's blast over the left field fence gave CCU the victory in game one. Nelson picked up her second win of the year going to 2-4, while UNCG's Vaness Oakes fell to 5-3. In the second game, UNCG struck with two gone in the first, as Joni Gomez singled through the left side of the infield and then scored on Hubbard's double to right center, putting the Spartans up 1-0. Coastal tied it at one in the bottom of the sixth, as Feely reached on an error by Kara Clouser. Pinch runner Jennifer Britton stole second and then scored with two outs on Lynee Hastings' double to right center. The Spartans responded in the top of the seventh, with two runs. Witt got on after being hit by a pitch. Christina Montana attempted to sacrifice her on the bunt, but ended up on second after a throwing error by Kimberly Cillis gave UNCG runners on second and third with no outs. Adriane Audley's flair into right field scored Witt with the game winner, while adding an insurance run on Joni Gomez's sacrifice fly to center. Coastal got one in the bottom of the seventh, as Hostetler singled with two outs and advanced to second on a throwing error by Clouser. Kristina Sheppard laced a single to center field to score Hostetler, but Coastal could not scratch out another run. Danyelle Gerdts took the loss for CCU, falling to 0-4, while Lynsi Pierce got the win to go to 5-0. Coastal hits the road for a six-day road trip, starting with the conference opener against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Tue., Mar. 16 in Rock Hill, S.C.
