Friday's Softball Results Print Elon 7, James Madison 1Friday, February 13, 2004ELON, N.C. -- Dani Concepcion and Megan Borgaard each drove in two runs and scored one to lead Elon to a season-opening 7-1 victory over James Madison (0-1) in the Triangle Classic. The Phoenix opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning when, with two outs and runners on first and second, Borgaard doubled to right center, scoring both Concepcion and Paige Goss. Borgaard then crossed the plate on a Christina Melton single. Elon upped the advantage to 4-0 in the top of the fifth when Goss was plated on Jenny Gustin single. The lead improved to 6-0 in the next inning when Concepcion's single scored both Lori Notaro and Suzanne Speed. The Dukes scored their only run in the bottom of the sixth on a Samantha Legoretta pinch-hit single that scored Tricia Berryman. Jamie Dupont homered for Elon in the top of the seventh to finish off the scoring. Jennifer Lamb (1-0) picked up the win for Elon after hurling 6.0 innings and allowing seven hits, one earned run and one walk. Lamb also fanned three hitters. Borgaard pitched a perfect seventh to finish off the Dukes. Briana Carrera (0-1) suffered the loss for James Madison, allowing seven earned runs on 12 Phoenix hits. She walked two and struck out four. Elon will take on North Carolina at 1:00 p.m. today at Elon's East Field in its second game of the Triangle Classic with James Madison and North Carolina squaring off at approximately 3:00 p.m. at East Field. North Carolina 4, Elon 1 (8)Friday, February 13, 2004ELON, N.C. - Despite Meredith Miley's first home run in a Phoenix uniform, the Elon University softball squad fell to North Carolina in its second game of the Triangle Classic by a margin of 4-1. Miley's home run came in the bottom of the second inning and was the only score until the top of the fifth inning when North Carolina's Emily Price scored. Price, who hit a single to the outfield to get on base, scored off of Joslin Higgin's base hit. In the top of the sixth inning, Megan Welch scored on a single from Dionne Street. Street and Anna Evans both scored on a base hit up the middle from Jessica Graziano to finish the scoring. Elon catcher Natalie Layden caught Price in an attempt to steal third and pitcher Meredith Gay struck out the next batter to finish the inning. For North Carolina, Crystal Cox (1-1) picks up the win after pitching the last three innings and giving up two hits and no runs. Gay (0-1) suffered the loss for Elon after throwing six full innings and allowing six hits, four runs and four walks. Elon (1-1) will continue play in the Triangle Classic tomorrow at Walnut Creek in Raleigh, N.C. North Carolina (1-2) faces James Madison this afternoon at East Field in a 4:00 p.m. game. Game 1: Evansville 2, Furman 1Game 2: Austin Peay 2, Furman 1AUBURN, Alabama -- Evansville's Alicia Laraway singled home Elisabeth Mooney with one out in the bottom of the ninth to give the Purple Aces a 2-1 victory over Furman in game one of the Tiger Softball Invitational Friday afternoon in Auburn, Ala. In game two, Austin Peay's Brianna Venable belted a solo home run in the top of the third to lead the Lady Govs to a 2-1 win over the Lady Paladins. Evansville struck first against Furman in game one. After Booke Luker reached on a walk and advanced to third on a fielder's choice and throwing error in the bottom of the second, Jennifer Duke drove her home to give the Purple Aces a 1-0 advantage. Furman evened the game in the top of the third. Freshman Lynn Parmer singled to left center, advanced to second on a wild pitch and came home to score on Megan Jaudon's double off of the center field fence. After both teams were unable to score with the international tiebreaker rule (runner on second to start the eighth inning), Evansville broke through when Luker scored the game-winning run in the ninth. Junior Katie Markle picked up the win foe the Aces (1-0) working four innings of scoreless relief. Jamie Davison paced Evansville at the plate going 3-for-4. Rachel Henley threw 8.1 innings for the Lady Paladins, allowing seven hits and no earned runs while striking out four. Freshman Danielle Franklin led Furman at the plate going 2-for-4. She, along with fellow freshmen Lyndy Wilcox, Parmer and Jaudon, picked up her first career hit in the 2-1 defeat. In game two, Austin Peay took a 1-0 first inning lead when Ami Bush scored from third when teammate Michelle Edmonds drew a throw as she attempted to steal second. Bush reached base when she single to left, advanced to second on a throwing error and moved to third on a wild pitch. After Venable's homer gave APSU a 2-0 lead, Furman got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs LaKerah Barr reached on an infield single, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Catcher Jessica Matthews followed with an RBI double just inside the third base bag driving home Barr. Lady Govs catcher Amy Hale caught Matthews attempting to steal third to end the threat. Freshman Natasha Anderson went the distance in the circle to earn the win for Austin Peay. The rookie surrendered only one run on seven hits while striking out ten Lady Paladins. Kristy Goodrich pitched a complete game for Furman allowing just one earned run and seven hits in seven innings. Furman (0-2) returns to action on Saturday when it takes on host Auburn in a 1:30 p.m. CST contest at Jane B. Moore Field.
