Thompson, Johnson Named SoCon Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week

SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Southern Conference today named its softball Player and Pitcher of the Week for March 12. UNC Greensboro third baseman Penny Thompson has earned the Player of the Week award while Furman sophomore Meagen Johnson has been named the Pitcher of the Week.

A junior from Franklin, NC, Thompson led the Spartans to a 5-0 record at the Charleston Southern Invitational Tournament on March 8 and 9. She was 9-of-18 (.500) at the plate, including three doubles and two home runs, while scoring five runs. UNC Greensboro finished the weekend a perfect 5-0, capturing the tournament title. Thompson joined teammate Jennifer Hubbard in being named to the all-tournament team. The Spartans are currently riding a nine-game winning streak.

Johnson, a sophomore from Georgetown, SC, pitched 13 innings without giving up a run for Furman and picked up two Lady Paladins wins in the Charleston Southern Invitational Tournament. She recorded 11 strikeouts and pitched two complete-game shutouts over Indiana on March 8 and Centenary on March 9. Johnson also belted a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning against Centenary, giving Furman the run support to clinch third place.
