CofC Announces 2004 Softball Schedule

CHARLESTON, SC- Fourteen home games at Patriots Point including 12 Southern Conference games and the College of Charleston Tournament highlight the 2004 Cougar softball schedule. The season gets underway on February 11th at Savannah State at 1:00.
"This year's schedule is very challenging," said head coach Chandelle Schulte, who was named 2003 Southern Conference Coach of the Year. "The schedule was made up with one principle in mind and that was to make it to regionals. Our goal this season is to make the NCAA Regionals through the SoCon tournament or based on strength of schedule."
In 2004 Charleston will play a tough non-conference schedule against teams including South Carolina, MTSU, UCF, Hawaii, Southern Illinois, Long Beach State, Minnesota, Mercer and Iowa State.
The Cougars first home game of the season comes on February 15th against Gardner Webb at Patriots Point. For the next three weeks following Gardner Webb, Charleston takes place in tournaments at South Carolina, Charleston Southern and Hawaii. The team will take part in the University of Hawaii Tournament on March 3-7 in Honolulu, HI.
The Cougars host the College of Charleston Tournament on March 12-14 where Bowling Green, ECU and UAB are among the teams coming to Mt. Pleasant for the three day event. Charleston heads to Atlanta to take part in the Buzz Classic on March 19-21 before getting the Southern Conference schedule underway on March 27th at Elon. The Cougars host Appalachian State on March 3rd in their first SoCon home game of the season.
Charleston final three home games of the season are set for May 1-2 against UNC Greensboro before the team heads to Chattanooga on May 8-9 for the final regular season games of the season. The 2004 Southern Conference tournament will be held in Chattanooga, TN on May 14-15.
"It will be very difficult to repeat what we accomplished last season," said Schulte. "But last year we felt like we didn't finish what we started and this season our main goal is to advance to the NCAA Regionals."
The Cougars finished 45-11 overall and 16-4 in capturing the Southern Conference regular season championship last season. Rachel Stern led the way for Charleston was named SoCon Pitcher of the Year finishing 26-5 with a 1.00 ERA.
