SPARTANBURG, S.C. – More than 1,400 student-athletes from 12 member institutions were named to the Southern Conference Academic Honor roll for the 2001-02 year. The 1,443 names is a conference record, surpassing the previous high of 1,360 in 2000-01.

Southern Conference athletic directors established the honor roll prior to the 1988-89 athletic year as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. After 364 earned the honor the first year, the honor roll has increased in 10 of the 12 subsequent years. The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports at member institutions and posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher while passing at least 24 hours in two semesters of classes or its equivalent for other academic calendars.

Eight of the 12 schools increased their number of honor roll student-athletes from 2000-2001. Appalachian State had the greatest improvement, adding 39 more names to its list. VMI increased its members by 20 with the Furman list increasing by 15.
