Brown, Gorman and Boney honored

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its volleyball players of the week on Monday for matches played Sept. 22-28. Wofford middle blocker Bradley Brown was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Furman middle blocker Tenny Gorman was named Defensive Player of the Week, while Western Carolina’s Katie Boney was tabbed Setter of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.
 
Brown averaged 4.00 kills per set, while logging a .697 hitting percentage and zero attack errors for Wofford as the Terriers won their first two conference matches of the season. On Sept. 25, the sophomore had eight kills, two blocks, two aces and an assist in a sweep of The Citadel. Two days later, the native of Florence, South Carolina, logged 16 kills with a hitting percentage of .842 as Wofford defeated Western Carolina via sweep. Brown also had six blocks and an ace versus the Catamounts. Brown is fourth in the SoCon in hitting percentage this season (.347).

 

Gorman anchored the Furman defense at the net, averaging 1.86 blocks per set over a pair of matches. The sophomore had six blocks along with 10 kills in a four-set win at UNCG on Sept. 25. The product of Franklin, Tennessee, logged seven blocks and six kills versus Samford on Sept. 27. Gorman leads the SoCon in total blocks this season (68).

 

Boney, who won the honor for the third time this season, averaged 9.67 assists per set in two matches last week. The junior from Brookhaven, Georgia, had a double-double in the team’s sweep of The Citadel on Sept. 26, finishing with 36 assists, 15 digs, one block and an ace. The next day, Boney recorded 22 assists and 10 digs in the team’s contest at Wofford. Boney leads the league in assists (459) and assists per set (9.98) this season.

 

Wofford plays at Samford on Oct. 3, and Chattanooga on Oct. 4. Furman hosts Mercer on Oct. 2, and The Citadel on Oct. 3. Western Carolina welcomes ETSU on Oct. 3, and UNCG on Oct. 4.
