SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its volleyball players of the week on Monday for matches played Oct. 13-19. Samford outside hitter Ally Cordes was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Furman outside hitter Ashley Stein was named Defensive Player of the Week, while UNCG’s Gabby Seeds was tabbed Setter of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.
Cordes averaged 4.38 kills per set as Samford won a pair of conference matches on the road. On Oct. 17, the junior logged 13 kills, seven digs, one ace and a solo block in a sweep of The Citadel. The next day, the native of Wyoming, Ohio, had 22 kills, nine digs, two aces and a block in a five-set win over Mercer. Cordes is currently third in the SoCon in service aces with 26.
Stein averaged 5.25 digs per set, while having a double-double during Furman’s two matches last week. The product of Easley, South Carolina, had 18 digs, 13 kills, a career-best four aces and three blocks in a five-set setback versus Chattanooga on Oct. 17. The sophomore followed that up with a career-high 24 digs and six kills in a sweep of Western Carolina on Oct. 18.
Seeds anchored the UNCG offense, averaging 8.63 assists pet set. The sophomore recorded 29 assists, six digs, two aces and a block in the team’s sweep at Wofford on Oct. 16. Two days later, the native of Plano, Texas, finished with a double-double, logging 40 assists, 12 digs, two aces and a block in a five-set setback against ETSU. Seeds is currently second in the conference in total assists (608).
Samford plays Furman on Oct. 23, and UNCG on Oct. 24. Furman faces UNCG on Oct. 25.
