SPARTANBURG, SC – Furman midfielder Diego Hernandez and UNC Greensboro goalkeeper Seth Wilson were named Southern Conference offensive and defensive players of the week for matches held from October 7-13.
Hernandez (Mesquite, TX / Lone Star HS) led No. 11 Furman to a pair of wins last week, scoring the game-winner in both contests. Hernandez finished the week with six points, dropping off a pair of assists to complement his scoring. He found the net in the 82nd minute of a 3-2 non-conference affair with Presbyterian last Tuesday night, then had two first-half assists and a 70th-minute penalty kick that proved to be the difference in a 3-2 win over ETSU on Saturday evening. A midseason watch list member for the prestigious Hermann Trophy, Hernandez leads the SoCon and ranks No. 10 nationally with 21 points so far this season. Hernandez also ranks in the top 15 nationally in game-winning goals (3), total assists (7), and points per game (1.62). He was named to Top Drawer Soccer’s National Team of the Week on Monday.
Wilson (Frisco, TX / Lone Star HS) lived up to his All-SoCon billing last week, keying No. 19 UNC Greensboro to a comfortable, 2-0 win over No. 5 High Point in a key regional non-conference battle. He registered a season-best five saves in that win and followed with another 90 minutes of scoreless soccer in a 2-0 league win over VMI. He and the Spartans’ defense have recorded three shutouts in the past four games. For his efforts, Wilson was also named College Soccer News National Goalkeeper of the Week on Monday. Wilson has played 1,080 minutes between the posts this season, recording 18 saves with eight victories and three clean sheets.
Furman (8-1-4, 1-0-1 SoCon) is back on the road this week, traveling to face VMI at 3:00 Saturday afternoon. UNC Greensboro (8-2-2, 1-1-0 SoCon) has another nationally relevant opportunity in store on Tuesday night, traveling to face No. 8 Virginia at 7:00. The Spartans will swing back into SoCon play at home on Saturday, hosting Wofford for Homecoming at 7:00.
The nationally ranked Paladins and Spartans face off in the season’s penultimate SoCon regular season match on Saturday, October 25 at 7:00 pm in Greenville, SC.
