Tied at 12 after a quarter of play, the Wofford women's basketball team ramped the intensity up a notch to outscore UNCG 20-8 in the second quarter en route to a 62-39 triumph in the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium Thursday night. Wofford opens SoCon play at 2-0 and improves to 11-6 on the season. The Spartans fall to 10-5 overall and suffer their first league loss for a 2-1 record.The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team dropped a 62-39 contest with Wofford in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Thursday night at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Freshman guard Nya Smith led the Spartans with 16 points in the game, securing two three-pointers and six field goals.
Chattanooga 69, Samford 63
The script was flipped and winning ways made their way back to the Roundhouse as the Chattanooga women's basketball team captured a gritty 69-63 win over the Samford Bulldogs on Thursday night. After going up by six points in the first quarter, then falling behind by as much as eight points in the second quarter, the Mocs pulled up their sleeves and went to work as they battled through a tough tilt with the Bulldogs. The back-and-forth affair featured 14 lead changes between the two sides, with Chattanooga ultimately able to pull away late in the fourth quarter to secure the six-point victory.The Samford women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought contest, 69-63, at Chattanooga Thursday night at McKenzie Arena. With the loss, Samford fell to 5-13 overall and 0-2 in Southern Conference play. Chattanooga improved its record to 7-9 overall and 2-1 in league play. Samford was led in the loss by Kennedy Langham with 22 points and nine rebounds. Alonya Waldon scored 13 points, while Claire Johnson and Aubrey Blankenship added 10 points each.
Furman 82, Western Carolina 73
Tate Walters poured in a career high 30 points and keyed a quick start that Furman used to gain control en route to an 82-73 victory over Western Carolina in Southern Conference women's basketball action on Thursday evening at Hayes Gymnasium on the campus of North Greenville University. Walters, a graduate guard, connected on 10-of-17 shots, including 4-of-8 3-pointers, and six free throws over 35 minutes of court time to lead the Paladins (11-7, 1-1 SoCon) to their 15th consecutive victory over the Catamounts (11-7, 1-2 SoCon).Chelsea Wooten nailed five 3-pointers in leading four Catamounts in double figures on Wednesday night as Western Carolina mounted a furious second half rally, erasing all but seven points of a game-high 23-point third quarter deficit. However, WCU was unable to complete the comeback as the Furman Paladins rode a hot start to the 82-73 victory in Southern Conference women's basketball action Thursday night at Hayes Gym on the campus of North Greenville University.
ETSU 70, Mercer 46
ETSU (10-8, 1-2 SoCon) scored 22 points off of 17 forced turnovers, while committing a season-low seven fouls. The Bucs also got a deep showing from the bench, outsourcing the Bears 26-4 in bench points. The Blue & Gold also held Mercer (6-11, 1-1 SoCon) to a season-low four attempts from the free throw line, the only time the Bears have shot single-digit free throws this season. Senior guard Braylyn Milton led the Buccaneers with 14 points on 4-for-5 shooting from 3-point range, six rebounds and four assists. 5th year guard Courtney Moore scored 13 and redshirt junior guard Paige Lyons added ten.
Home-standing East Tennessee State scored 22 points off of 17 Mercer turnovers and pulled away for good with a dominant third-quarter effort on the way to a 70-46 win over the Bears on Thursday evening in Brooks Gymnasium. The setback stopped a two-game win skein for Mercer (6-11, 1-1 SoCon) who shot 43 percent from the field for the third time in five games despite the final score. The triumph snapped a two-game skid for the Bucs (10-8, 1-2) who picked up their first Southern Conference win in the process as well.
