SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Fourteen Southern Conference student-athletes will participate in the 2024 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary,
as the field was announced Thursday by the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country Committee.
Eight SoCon men and six SoCon women will compete at the East Preliminary, which will be contested at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky, from Wednesday, May 22, to Saturday, May 25.
Samford and Furman lead the way with four selections each, followed by Wofford with two, and ETSU, VMI, Western Carolina, and The Citadel with one selection each.
The SoCon will have representation in thirteen events during the East Preliminary, including the men and women's 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter, the women's 400-meter, 100-meter, high jump, and javelin throw, and the men's 200-meter, 800-meter, 110-meter hurdles, high jump and pole vault.
Furman's Dylan Schubert is the highest-seeded SoCon competitor at No. 10 in the 5,000 meter and will be joined by ETSU's Jason Bowers while Paladin teammate Cameron Ponder is 27th in the 1,500-meter. Samford's Brenden Vanderpool is ranked 17th in the pole vault, Zephaniah Carico-McLennan is 18th in the 800-meter, Titus Moore is 29th in the 110-meter hurdles, and Jaggerd Moore is 33rd in the high jump. Wofford's Cameron Dalton is 32nd in the 200-meter dash.
On the women's side, The Citadel's Ali Ruffin is 27th in the Javelin, VMI's Eleyah Armstrong is 26th in the 100-meter dash, and Wofford's Jasmine Jefferson is 29th in the 400-meter. Furman's Sierra Bower is 40th in the 5,000-meter and Megan Marvin is 41st in the 1,500-meter. Western Carolina's Heidi Hudson will compete in the high jump where she is ranked 23rd.
The qualifiers out of the East and West preliminaries will compete in the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 5-8 in Eugene, Oregon.
