Four schools honored with weekly awards

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Cameron Ponder and Samford’s Brenden Vanderpool have been named the Southern Conference men’s indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively, while Chattanooga’s Lesley Green Boyd and Wofford’s Sherika Christie claimed women’s track and field athlete of the week honors, respectively, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition from Feb. 7-13.

Ponder competed at the Boston University Valentine Invitational in Boston, Massachusetts, where he set a school record in the 3000 meter with a time of 7:48.20. Competing at the Bulldog Open in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday, Vanderpool won the Men’s Pole Vault after setting a new personal record by a foot. The Smyrna, Georgia, product’s top mark of 5.45m ranks 18th in the NCAA and placed the freshman in the conference lead.

Chattanooga’s Green Boyd competed in the Music City Challenge in Nashville, Tennessee, on Saturday where she broke an 18-year-old school record in the 3000m run with a time of 9:22.6. The Dayton, Tennessee, native finished third collegiately in the event and broke her personal record by 14 seconds. The previous school record of 9:31.5, was set in 2006 by All-American Shannon Wommack.
