SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina guard Vonterius Woolbright has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for all contests from Feb. 5-11 after averaging 21.5 points per game last week. The award is selected by the league office.
 
Woolbright extended his school record for conference player of the week selections in one season, picking up his eighth honor of the season. His eight recognitions are the most conference player of the week selections for any Catamount in their career. Woolbright’s honor this week also tied SoCon Hall of Famer Steph Curry’s record for the most player of the week selections in conference history. Curry won SoCon player of the week eight times in the 2008-09 season.
 
Western Carolina went 2-0 last week in a pair of home games, defeating The Citadel, 71-64, on Feb. 7, before topping Mercer, 79-46, on Feb. 10.
 
In the game with The Citadel, Woolbright had a game-high 27 points on 11-for-19 shooting. The Albany, Georgia, native also pulled down 11 rebounds and dished out three assists in the contest.
 
Against Mercer, the redshirt senior recorded his third triple-double of the season, finishing with 16 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and a steal. Woolbright leads the NCAA in triple-doubles, accounting for three of the 28 posted this season. His third triple-double of the season also gave him four total for his Catamount career, making him the school record holder in the category.
 
For the week, Woolbright averaged 21.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game. Woolbright leads the conference in scoring (22.4 ppg) and rebounding (12.3 rpg), placing him fourth and second, respectively, in the NCAA in the two categories.
 
Western Carolina (18-7, 7-5 SoCon) travels to Samford (22-3, 11-1) on Valentine’s Day, before retuning home to host ETSU (13-12, 5-7) on Saturday.
