SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel’s Solomon Ghosh has been named the Southern Conference men’s field athlete of the week for the third week in a row, while Bulldogs Mecca Jackson and Ali Wilson-Ruffin have been named the women’s track and field athletes of the week, respectively, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all outdoor competition from April 26 to May 2. They are the final selections of the season. There was not a men’s track athlete of the week nomination this week.
For the second straight week, Ghosh broke the school record in the discus throw, eclipsing his own mark with a toss of 54.38 meters to take second at North Florida’s East Coast Relays in Jacksonville, Florida. That throw increased his SoCon lead in the event to 8.68 meters and ranks 39th on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List. Ghosh, a graduate student from Blacksburg, Virginia, also took 10th in the hammer with a throw of 46.41 meters and 16th in the shot put with a heave of 13.60 meters.
Also competing at the East Coast Relays, Jackson broke the school record in the 100-meter dash for the second straight week, finishing 21st in the event in 11.73 seconds, the second-best time in the SoCon this season. Jackson, a junior from Sandersville, Georgia, also broke her own program record in the 200-meter dash, finishing 11th in 23.92 seconds, the top time in the SoCon in the event this season.
Wilson-Ruffin, also competing at the East Coast Relays, broke the school record in the javelin, unleashing a throw of 45.24 meters to finish third and supplant a program mark that had stood since 2018. The sophomore from Greenville, North Carolina, climbed two spots to No. 3 on the SoCon leaderboard this season and ranks 46th on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List.
The Citadel and the rest of the league teams return to action at the Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Western Carolina’s Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee, North Carolina, on Monday and Tuesday.
