SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Eighteen Southern Conference student-athletes will participate in the 2023 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary,
as the field was announced Thursday by the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country Committee.
Twelve SoCon men and six SoCon women will compete at the East Preliminary, which will be contested at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida, from Wednesday, May 24, to Saturday, May 27.
Samford leads the way with eight total selections, followed by Furman with four and The Citadel, Western Carolina and Wofford with two each.
The SoCon had three selections in the men’s triple jump, with Samford’s Edwin Rainey and Western Carolina’s Javell and Javon Brown in the field.
The league has two participants each in three other events.
Furman’s Abigail Robertson and Samford’s McKenzie Hogue will compete in the women’s 1,500-meter run, Samford’s Erin Long and The Citadel’s Ali Wilson-Ruffin will compete in the women’s javelin and Furman’s Carson Williams and Cameron Ponder will run in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Long is the highest-seeded SoCon competitor at No. 10 in the javelin, while Furman’s Williams is No. 13 in the steeplechase.
The qualifiers out of the East and West preliminaries will compete in the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 7-10 in Austin, Texas.
