SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford designated hitter John Anderson and Wofford right-hander Mike Eggert have been named the Southern Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all competition from April 24-30. The awards are selected by the league office.
 
Anderson hit .444 and slugged 1.389 in the Bulldogs’ four road games last week, hitting five home runs and two doubles, scoring six runs and driving in 15. The junior from Oakwood, Georgia, went deep and had at least two RBIs in each game on the week, starting with a two-run shot in a 13-6 setback at Alabama on Tuesday. In Friday’s series-opening 17-7 win at VMI, Anderson hit two grand slams and a sacrifice fly for nine RBIs, the single-game high by a SoCon player this season. The following day, Anderson collected three more hits, with his two-run home run in the top of the 11^th inning proving the difference in the 9-7 win in game one of a doubleheader. In Saturday’s series finale, an 8-7 VMI win, Anderson notched his third straight multi-hit game, connecting for an RBI double in the first and a solo homer in the third. He was also hit by a pitch in the sixth, reaching base three times in the contest. With six homers in his last six games, Anderson has moved into the SoCon lead with 16 for the season. Anderson was named one of Collegiate Baseball’s National Players of the Week, powered by Diamond Sports, on Monday.
 
League-leading Samford (24-20, 10-5 SoCon) caps a nine-game road swing at Jacksonville State on Wednesday at 4 p.m. CT before welcoming Western Carolina (16-26, 5-9) for three games beginning Friday at 4 p.m. CT.
 
Making just his fourth start of the season, Wofford’s Eggert went a career-long five innings and struck out a career-best seven batters as the Terriers topped UNC Asheville on the road Tuesday, 13-0 in seven innings. A junior from Greenville, South Carolina, Eggert allowed just four singles and a walk on the day. After getting into trouble in the bottom of the first inning by allowing consecutive singles and a walk with two outs, Eggert got a strikeout looking to end the threat. That would be the first of 10 straight batters retired by Eggert, who did not allow another batter to reach until the fifth inning, when he surrendered a pair of singles but induced a 6-4-3 double play to escape the threat. Eggert, who has not allowed a run in his last two starts, improved to 4-1 on the season.
 
Wofford (32-11, 8-4 SoCon) continues a seven-game road swing at nationally ranked Tennessee on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. ET before visiting UNCG (19-25, 6-9) for three games, starting Friday at 6 p.m. ET.
