SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Carson Williams and Kaylie Armitage have been named the Southern Conference men’s and women’s outdoor track athletes of the week, respectively, while The Citadel’s Solomon Ghosh and Samford’s Hannah Daffin have earned men’s and women’s field athlete of the week honors, respectively, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all outdoor competition from April 19-25.
Furman’s Williams earned his second SoCon honor in three weeks after turning in a fifth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at Eastern Kentucky’s Rick Erdmann Twilight in Richmond, Kentucky, on Saturday. The junior from Raleigh, North Carolina, clocked a time of 8:43.56 in his season debut in the event, a mark that leads the SoCon by nearly nine seconds and ranks 10th on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List.
The Citadel’s Ghosh earned his second straight weekly honor. The graduate student from Blacksburg, Virginia, competed at the USC Open in Columbia, South Carolina, on Saturday, finishing third in the discus with a throw of 52.75 meters to supplant a program record that had stood since 1990. Ghosh, who finished ahead of five other SoCon throwers in the field, leads the SoCon by more than seven meters and ranks 59th on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List in the event. Ghosh also took 11th in the hammer with a throw of 44.62 meters and 17th in the shot put with a mark of 12.47 meters Saturday.
Competing at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Friday, Furman’s Armitage finished 16th in the 1,500-meter run 4:20.56. That time is a career-best for the sophomore from Exeter, Rhode Island, who leads the SoCon in the event by four seconds and ranks 67th on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List.
Samford’s Daffin earned her second honor of the season after finishing fifth in the hammer throw at the Crimson Tide Invite in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on Friday. The senior from Mobile, Alabama, turned in a personal-best toss of 54.90 meters in the event, which paces the SoCon this season by 3.72 meters and ranks 85th on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List.
