SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Cagan Campbell and The Citadel’s Solomon Ghosh have been named the Southern Conference men’s outdoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively, while Wofford’s Kerrington Johnson and Samford’s Erin Long earned the respective awards on the women’s side, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all outdoor competition from April 12-18.
Competing at the Samford Alabama Track Challenge on Friday, Samford’s Campbell picked up a trio of wins in the sprints. The graduate student from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, opened his day by running the anchor leg on the Bulldogs’ victorious 4x100-meter relay, which turned in a SoCon-leading time of 40.42 seconds. He then won the very next event, the 400-meter dash, in 47.94 seconds, his second-fastest time of the season. Campbell completed the hat trick about an hour later with a win in the 200-meter dash in a SoCon-best time of 21.19 seconds. The Bulldogs’ relay time ranks 51st on the 2023 NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List.
The Citadel’s Ghosh competed at Western Carolina’s Catamount Classic in Cullowhee, North Carolina, the site of this year’s SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championships, winning the discus Saturday with a toss of 52.01 meters. That mark leads the SoCon this season by nearly eight meters and ranks second in program history and 62nd on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List. Ghosh also finished seventh in the hammer on Friday with a throw of 45.08 meters and took 10th in the shot put on Saturday with a mark of 13.19 meters.
Wofford’s Johnson also ran Friday and Saturday at the Catamount Classic. The senior from Anderson, South Carolina, swept the hurdles and turned in conference-leading times in three events. Johnson turned in her two best times of the season in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking 13.70 seconds in Friday’s prelims before picking up the win on Saturday in 13.58 seconds. Later that afternoon, she won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.86, the second-best time of her career. Johnson capped her day by helping the Terriers take second in the 4x400-meter relay, as she ran the third leg in helping Wofford to a SoCon-best time of 3:50.94. Johnson ranks 39th on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List in the 100m hurdles and 89th in the 400m hurdles.
Johnson was also named the SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.
Samford’s Long competed at the Samford Alabama Track Challenge on Friday, claiming a pair of event wins and notching a pair of SoCon-leading marks. The junior from Pelham, Alabama, opened her day with a win in the javelin throw with a season-best toss of 50.09 meters, which leads the league by 4.6 meters and ranks 10th on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List. She followed that up with a victory in the high jump in her outdoor season debut, with her career-best mark of 1.68 meters ranking 87th on the regional qualifying list.
