SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer senior Mary Weston Courville has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played from April 4-10, the conference announced on Tuesday. The award is selected by the league office.
Courville went 3-0 at No. 2 singles and 3-0 at No. 1 doubles with partner Teodora Ristic to help the Bears to a 2-1 week.
In a 5-2 win over Wofford on April 4, Courville and Ristic picked up a 6-2 win over Georgia Fischer and Lily Woods. Courville then clinched the match in singles play with her 6-4, 6-4 win over Breda Brennan.
In a 6-1 loss to ETSU on Thursday, Courville and Ristic handed Laylo Bakhodirova and Mariya Shumeika their first league loss of the season with a 6-3 decision at the top flight. Courville then topped Shumeika in singles play, 7-5, 1-6, 6-1, for the Bears’ lone team point against the Bucs.
Courville closed her week with two more wins in a 4-0 Senior Day win over Alabama State on Sunday. The Columbus, Georgia, native once again paired with Ristic for a 6-1 win over Francesca Duca and Lizaveta Demchnko at the top doubles position before picking up a 6-1, 6-2 win over Urska Velec in singles play.
The weekly award is the first of Courville’s career.
Mercer (11-8, 3-2 SoCon) wraps up the regular season with matches at league-leading Furman (9-11, 5-0) on Wednesday at 3 p.m. and at UNCG (4-14, 0-5) on Sunday at 12 p.m.
