Samford claims three of the four awards

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Cagan Campbell and Tripp Marcus have been named the Southern Conference men’s outdoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively, while Chattanooga’s Lesley Green and Samford’s Hannah Daffin earned the respective awards on the women’s side, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all outdoor competition from March 22-28.

Competing at the Bulldog Relays hosted by Mississippi State in Starkville, Mississippi, Campbell posted a pair of SoCon-leading marks and set a pair of program records. On Friday, the graduate student from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, finished seventh in the 400-meter dash in 47.57 seconds, which ranks 38th on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List and 74th on the combined NCAA Division I Outdoor Qualifying List. The following day, Campbell ran the anchor leg on the Bulldogs’ 4x100-meter relay team, which finished fifth in 40.55 seconds. That mark ranks 23rd in the region and 54th on the combined list.

Samford’s Marcus finished fourth in the javelin at the Bulldog Relays on Saturday with a throw of 65.51 meters, which leads the SoCon by more than nine meters. The senior from Ruston, Louisiana, ranks 25th on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List and 37th on the combined NCAA Division I Outdoor Qualifying List with that effort, which came in just his second meet in a Bulldog uniform.

Chattanooga’s Green ran at the Raleigh Relays, hosted by NC State in Raleigh, North Carolina, late Thursday evening, finishing third in the 10,000-meter run in a personal-best time of 34:28.85. The senior from Dayton, Tennessee, who ran her second 5K faster than the first, leads the SoCon in the event this season by more than a minute and a half and ranks 24th on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List and 30th on the combined NCAA Division I Outdoor Qualifying List.

Samford’s Daffin posted conference-leading marks in two events at the Bulldog Relays last week. The senior from Mobile, Alabama, opened her week with a runner-up finish in the hammer with a league-leading throw of 52.44 meters on Thursday. The next day, Daffin finished ninth in the discus with a personal-best toss of 41.50 meters, which ranks third in the SoCon this season, while she closed her meet Saturday with a fifth-place finish in the shot put with another SoCon-leading mark of 13.83 meters.
