HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Senior Anna Morgan (+4) fired a 68 to tie for 16th Wednesday to lead the Furman (+46) women’s golf team in the final round of the 11th-annual Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the par 71, 6,220 yard Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
Morgan, a native of Spartanburg, S.C., teed off on No. 10 and, other than a bogey on No. 11, played a flawless round. After turning at 1-over, she birdied No. 1 to even the slate then reeled off three-straight birdies from No. 4 through No. 6 to surge up the leader board. Morgan finished nine strokes behind 63rd-ranked Mathilde Claisse (-5) of South Carolina, who won individual medalist honors by one stroke with a three-day total of 69-69-70=208.
Freshman Faith Johnson (+11) shot a 75 with a birdie on No. 2 to finish in a tie for 53rd, while freshman Chloe Johnson (+19) carded a 1-over 72 with a birdie on No. 8 to tie for 79th. Freshman Liza Lapeyre (+19) also tied for 79th after shooting a 77 with birdies on No. 1 and No. 3 on Wednesday. Junior Caroline Crumrine (+21) finished in 82nd place. She tallied a 77 with a birdie on No. 18 in the final round.
The tournament included 16 teams ranked in the top 50 and ten teams who rank among the nation’s top 20. No. 6 LSU (+4) shot 1-under on Wednesday to surge into the lead and beat host South Carolina, which ranks 4th nationally, by six strokes. No. 15 Auburn (+14) was third, followed by second-ranked Wake Forest (+15) in fourth place and No. 8 Texas (+19) in fifth place. Furman (+46) , the only non-Power 5 team in the field, finished 16th, ahead of No. 31 Arkansas (+52) and just a few strokes back of 23rd-ranked Kentucky (+42).
Furman will compete at The Momentum Transportation UNF Collegiate presented by Gravity Diagnostics in Jacksonville, Fla., on Monday and Tuesday.
