SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Carson Williams and Western Carolina’s Noah Straley have been named the Southern Conference men’s indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively, while Western Carolina’s Nytrinitey Jenkins and Samford’s Hannah Daffin claimed the respective women’s honors, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition from Feb. 1-7.
Furman’s Williams competed at the Camel City Invitational at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Saturday. The junior from Raleigh, North Carolina, took fourth place overall and second among collegiate runners in the elite 3,000-meter run, clocking 7:55.87. His converted time of 7:50.40 leads the SoCon this season and ranks No. 18 on the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying List. The weekly award is the second of his indoor career, as he also won it on Feb. 16, 2022.
Western Carolina’s Straley competed at the South Carolina Invitational in Columbia, South Carolina, on Friday and Saturday. The freshman from Jacksonville, Florida, took third in the long jump with a leap of 7.29 meters, which leads the SoCon this season. Straley also competed on the track, running the 400-meter dash and a leg on the 4x400-meter relay. His 400m time of 49.35 seconds ranks fourth in the league this season. The weekly honor is the first of his career.
Western Carolina’s Jenkins, also competing at the South Carolina Invitational, turned in the top time in the SoCon this season in the 200-meter dash, as her time of 25.00 seconds was good for 10th in the event. The junior from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, also finished 14th in the 400-meter dash in 57.52 seconds, the second-best time in the conference this season, and ran the anchor leg on the Catamounts’ eighth-place 4x400-meter relay, which clocked 3:55.35, the third-best time in the SoCon this season. The weekly honor is the first of her career.
Samford’s Daffin competed at the South Alabama Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama, on Sunday. The senior from Mobile, Alabama, took fifth in the shot put with a throw of 13.91 meters and sixth in the weight throw with a heave of 16.48 meters. Both marks trail her own conference-leading efforts from this season but easily outdistance the second-place marks on the SoCon performance list. The weekly award is the second of her indoor career, as she also won it on Feb. 17, 2021.
