Samford’s Lopez named SoCon player of the week

Bulldog junior went a combined 4-0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Alexis Lopez has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played from Jan. 31 to Feb. 6, the conference announced on Tuesday. The award is selected by the league office.
 
Lopez helped the Bulldogs to wins over in-state rivals Alabama State and North Alabama over the weekend.
 
In Saturday’s 5-2 win over ASU, Lopez paired with Ally Hayduk for a 6-1 win over Sahra Bouchaala and Timonthee Leguad at No. 2 doubles. She then earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lizaveta Demchenko at No. 1 singles.
 
Lopez followed that up with another couple of wins in Sunday’s 6-1 victory over North Alabama. She and Hayduk shut out Ana Josic and Kalais Going 6-0 in doubles play before the San Antonio, Texas, junior overcame a first-set loss for a 3-6, 6-0, 10-5 win over Juliette Talieu at the top singles flight.
 
The weekly award is the first of Lopez’s career.
 
Samford (3-2) hosts Georgia State at noon CT on Saturday.
