SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina indoor track and field runner Kate Mattison has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from Feb. 8-14. The selection is made by the conference office.
 
Mattison lowered her own school and personal records in the mile at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational in Lynchburg, Virginia, on Saturday, turning in a time of 4:55.07 to finish 11^th in the event and drop 0.90 seconds from the program record she set on Jan. 21. She also competed in the 3,000-meter run at the meet on Friday, finishing 14^th in a personal-best time of 9:52.01.
 
Her mile time ranks eighth in the SoCon this season, while her 3,000m time is good for ninth.
 
A fifth-year senior from Oconee, Georgia, Mattison has a 4.0 GPA and is pursuing a Master of Health Science degree.
 
Western Carolina, which capped off its regular season at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational, is back in action at the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Lexington, Virginia, on Feb. 25-26.
 
Also nominated: Laylo Bakhodirova (ETSU women’s tennis), Addie Grace Porter (Chattanooga women’s basketball) and Robbie Young (Wofford men’s tennis).
