Furman sweeps track honors, Samford claims field honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Carson Williams and Jenna Mulhern have been named the Southern Conference men’s and women’s indoor track athletes of the week, respectively, while Samford’s Jed Sisco and Dorsey Parker claimed the respective men’s and women’s field athlete of the week honors, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition from Feb. 8-14.

Furman’s Williams captured his second straight weekly honor after his performance at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Washington, on Friday. The junior from Raleigh, North Carolina, finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run in a personal-best time 13:42.39, which lowered his own program record in the event by nine seconds. Williams’s time leads the SoCon by nearly three seconds and ranks 50th on the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying List this season. The weekly award is the third of his indoor career.

Furman’s Mulhern also competed in the 5,000-meter run at the Husky Classic on Friday. The freshman from West Chester, Pennsylvania, finished 16th overall in a personal-best time of 16:11.14, which ranks second in the SoCon behind only teammate Bethany Graham. The weekly honor is the first of Mulhern’s career.

Samford’s Sisco competed at the Samford Bulldog Invite in Birmingham, Alabama, on Friday. The defending SoCon champion in the pole vault cleared a personal-best 5.30 meters to win the event and extend his conference lead to nearly half a meter. The junior from Morrow, Ohio, sits 35th on the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying List with his leap, which ranks third all-time in program history. The weekly award is the third of his indoor career.

Samford’s Parker finished second in the high jump at the Samford Bulldog Invite on Friday with a season-best leap of 1.68 meters to take sole possession of the top spot in the SoCon performance list this season. The freshman from Mobile, Alabama, who leads the league in the event by 3/4 of an inch, claims the first weekly honor of her career and becomes the third different Samford women’s field athlete to claim the honor this season.
