SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Matthew Smith and Megan Marvin have repeated as the Southern Conference men’s and women’s indoor track athletes of the week, respectively, while VMI’s Keyandre Midgett and Eleyah Armstrong claimed men’s and women’s field athlete of the week honors, respectively, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition from Jan. 25-31.
Furman’s Smith won his second straight weekly honor and the second of his career after his efforts at Clemson’s Bob Pollock Invitational in Clemson, South Carolina, on Friday and Saturday. In Friday’s mile run, the sophomore from Leesburg, Virginia, finished fourth in a personal-best time of 4:02.48, which ranks second in the SoCon this season. The following day, Smith finished second in the 800-meter run in a personal-best and program-record time of 1:48.65, breaking the marks he set just last weekend. His 800m time ranks 23
rd on the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying List.
Marvin, who was also named the SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, claimed her second straight track athlete of the week honor after her performances at the Bob Pollock Invitational. The junior from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, finished second in both the 800m and the mile, turning in personal-best times in both events. On Friday, Marvin ran a 4:37.56 mile, which leads the SoCon by more than five seconds and ranks 28th on the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying List. On Saturday, Marvin’s time of 2:04.27 in the 800m broke her own program record. It leads the SoCon by more than four seconds and ranks ninth on the NCAA performance list. The weekly award is the sixth of Marvin’s career, breaking a tie with Western Carolina’s Tayla Carter (2013-16) for the most in SoCon women’s indoor history.
Competing at the VMI Winter Classic in Lexington, Virginia, the Keydets’ Midgett finished second in the long jump Saturday with a personal-best leap of 7.13 meters. In his first long-jump competition of the season, the junior from Portsmouth, Virginia, turned in the third-best jump in the SoCon this season. The weekly honor is Midgett’s second in three weeks and the second of his career.
VMI’s Armstrong, also competing at the VMI Winter Classic, finished third in the long jump Saturday. The sophomore from Hampton, Virginia, matched the Keydets’ program record with a personal-best mark of 5.83 meters and turned in four leaps of 5.66m or better on the day.
