Wofford faces Kentucky in opening round of NCAA Tournament

SoCon champs face No. 2 seed Wildcats on Thursday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The 2023 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship bracket was announced along with the full 64-team field by the NCAA Division Women's Volleyball committee tonight. The 2023 Southern Conference Tournament champion Wofford Terriers were selected to face the No. 2 seeded Kentucky Wildcats on Thursday, November 30.

"It felt amazing," said assistant coach Shannah Carter of seeing Wofford's name announced. "This is a very special group of girls who've put in a lot of time and a lot of work. Especially with having six seniors, it's just awesome having them cap their careers here with that."

The full field of teams and bracket were both announced during the selection show at 6:00 p.m. Wofford was selected into No. 1 Nebraska's quadrant of the bracket. The Terriers will play their first round match-up against No. 2 Kentucky, who is a host of one of the four-team pods. The Terriers and Wildcats will face off against one another at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 30 at Kentucky's Rupp Arena in Lexington. No. 7 James Madison and Baylor are the other teams in Kentucky's pod and will play in the first round. The second round, also to be played in Lexington, will feature the winners of both matches the following night on Friday, December 1, at 7:00 p.m.

"I'm really excited. It's not often that I get to play in a place so close to home," said senior Addison Foote, a Kentucky native, of the pairing. "Also I know some of the girls on their team, so it's just a really cool match-up."

After winning its first-ever SoCon Tournament, Wofford is making its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. This is the first NCAA Tournament appearance for any women's team sport at Wofford. The Terriers are one of four teams making their first appearances in the tournament this season, joining Coppin State, Grand Canyon and Omaha. The first-round match will be the first meeting between Wofford and Kentucky ever.

"It's amazing. It literally doesn't feel real," said junior Mary Emily Morgan of the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. "Every time we talk about, we're just getting excited all over again. So it's going to be so fun."
