SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina guard Vonterius Woolbright has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for all contests from Nov. 6-12 after averaging 20.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game on the week. The award is selected by the league office.
 
Woolbright, the preseason SoCon Player of the Year, opened his 2023-24 season with 19 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in Western Carolina’s 106-65 win over Dalton State on Nov. 7. The Albany, Georgia, native shot 5-for-8 (.625) from the field in 26 minutes played against Dalton State.
 
In the Catamounts’ first road game of the season on Nov. 11, Woolbright had a double-double, finishing with a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds as Western Carolina upset ACC foe Notre Dame 71-61. The senior added three assists in the contest while going 11-for-12 at the charity stripe. The win marked the Catamounts’ first victory over a Power Five opponent since the 2003-04 season when Western Carolina defeated Arkansas. The program had wins over Big East opponents in 2009 and 2010, downing Louisville and DePaul, respectively.
 
For the week, Woolbright shot 36 percent (10-for-28) from the floor and was 20-for-26 (.769) from the free-throw line.
 
Western Carolina (2-0) visits Middle Tennessee on Monday at 7:30 p.m. before hosting McNeese State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
