SoCon announces cross country runners of the week

ETSU's Bowers, Furman's Wilkes Honored

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU’s Jason Bowers and Furman’s Carly Wilkes have been named the Southern Conference men’s and women’s cross country runners of the week, respectively, after all competition Sept. 29-Oct. 3. 

Bowers, who won the honor on Sept. 20, placed second this weekend in the Gold seeded race of the Live in Lou Classic. The sophomore posted a personal best and ETSU school record with an 8K time of 23:14.3. The Parys, South Africa, product led his team to a 12th place finish with 430 points. 

Wilkes led Furman to a team win at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational with an individual sixth place finish in a field that included four teams ranked in the top 30 nationally. The Salem, Virginia, native posted a 89-second personal best in the 6K with a time of 20:00.7, outracing multiple all-American runners. The Paladins finished with 58 points beating the runner up, 25th -ranked Ole Miss, by eight points. 

ETSU returns to action Saturday, October 14, at the USC Upstate Invitational in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Furman competes at the Queens College Royals Challenge on October 6, in Charlotte, North Carolina.
