SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Matthew Smith and Megan Marvin have been named the Southern Conference men’s and women’s indoor track athletes of the week, respectively, while Samford’s Ty Kimberlin and Western Carolina’s Imani Boyd claimed men’s and women’s field athlete of the week honors, respectively, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition from Jan. 18-24.
Furman’s Smith, competing at the Carolina Challenge in Columbia, South Carolina, on Saturday, took second in the invitational 800-meter run in 1:49.83, just 0.01 second back of first place. Smith’s time is a program indoor record, ranks first in the SoCon this season and is tied for 22nd on the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying List. The weekly award is the first of the Leesburg, Virginia, sophomore’s career.
Competing in her first meet of the indoor season, Furman’s Marvin won the invitational 800-meter run at the Carolina Challenge on Saturday, turning in a SoCon-leading time of 2:05.77, which is tied for fifth on the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying List. The junior from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, also paced teammate Abigail Robertson to gold in the invitational mile. Marvin earned the indoor weekly honor for the fifth time in her career, tying the career mark set by Western Carolina’s Tayla Carter from 2013-16.
Samford’s Kimberlin competed at the Samford Multis in Birmingham, Alabama, on Thursday and Friday. The graduate student from Olive Branch, Mississippi, won the heptathlon with a personal-best score of 5,431, which ranks third all-time in program history. His score leads the SoCon this season by 602 points and ranks eighth on the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying List. Kimberlin, who won the heptathlon long jump and 1,000-meter run and finished second in the 60-meter dash, shot put and high jump, claimed SoCon weekly honors for the second time in his career. He was also named the SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week earlier Wednesday afternoon.
Western Carolina’s Boyd competed at the Carolina Challenge. The Charlotte, North Carolina, junior took second in the high jump on Saturday, clearing 1.65 meters, which ranks third in the SoCon this season, just a quarter of an inch back of first. Boyd also competed in the 60-meter hurdles, turning in a personal-best time of 8.89 in the prelims, with that time also ranking third in the SoCon this season. The weekly award is the first of Boyd’s career.
