SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU runner Rebekah Howard has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from Jan. 11-17. The selection is made by the conference office.
 
Howard picked up the first wins of her career as ETSU opened the indoor track and field season at the VMI Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Ashland, Kentucky, native got her redshirt junior season off on the right foot with a win Friday in the 1,000-meter run. Howard turned in a time of 3:04.15 to win the event by more than six seconds.
 
Howard followed that up with another win Saturday morning, posting a personal-best time of 5:06.96 to win the event by more than 12 seconds. Her mile time currently ranks second in the conference.
 
A nursing major, Howard owns a 3.642 GPA.
 
ETSU returns to action at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee, on Friday and Saturday.
 
Also nominated: Abbey Cornelius (Chattanooga), Kyla Allison (Western Carolina) and Helen Matthews (Wofford).
