SoCon announces indoor track and field athletes of the week

Four schools honored with first awards of indoor season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU’s Phelani Maduwa and VMI’s Keyandre Midgett have been named the Southern Conference men’s indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively, Furman’s Kaylie Armitage and Samford’s Brittany Bishop claimed women’s track and field athlete of the week honors, respectively, the conference office announced Wednesday.
 
Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition to this point in the season.
 
Maduwa opened his senior campaign at the VMI Invitational in Lexington, Virginia, on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Parys, Free State, South Africa, native finished third in the 500-meter run in 1:04.43. He followed that up with his second career win in the 800-meter run as a Buccaneer on Saturday, clocking a conference-leading time of 1:52.21, which ranks 40th on the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying List. Maduwa also ran the second leg on ETSUs 4x400-meter relay, which finished fifth in a time of 3:21.64.
 
Also competing at the VMI Invitational, Midgett won the triple jump Friday with a personal-best leap of 15.16 meters. His mark leads the SoCon by more than two feet and ranks 38th on the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying List. The junior from Portsmouth, Virginia, also ran the 60-meter hurdles, finishing seventh in Friday’s prelims in 8.32, the second-fastest time in the league so far this season.
 
Furman’s Armitage opened her indoor season on Dec. 2 at the Clemson Opener in Clemson, South Carolina. There, the sophomore from Exeter, Rhode Island, won the 3,000-meter run in a time of 9:43.56, which leads the SoCon by exactly two seconds. Armitage also ran a leg on one of Furman’s 4x400-meter relay squads.
 
Samford’s Bishop competed at the UAB Blazer Invite on Friday, winning the pole vault with a height of 4.01 meters, 0.10 meters ahead of second place. Bishop, a senior from Clinton, Tennessee, leads the SoCon by half a meter and ranks 37th on the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying List.
 
The weekly awards are the first career indoor honors for Maduwa, Midgett and Armitage. Bishop’s award is the third indoor citation of her career.
