Mercer’s Gonzalez named SoCon player of the week

Freshman guard set a new career high at Chattanooga

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer’s Enjulina Gonzalez has been named Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played Jan. 10-16 after averaging 21 points per game last week. The award is selected by the league office.
 
Gonzalez began the week coming off the bench to play 19 minutes as the Bears defeated ETSU, 66-52, on Thursday. The native of Miami, Florida, scored eight points, dished out two assists and grabbed two steals. Gonzalez went 4-for-6 (.667) from the field in the contest against the Buccaneers.
 
In the game at Chattanooga, which the Mocs won 78-70 in overtime on Saturday, Gonzalez set a new career high in scoring with 34 points in 36 minutes off the bench. The freshman was 15-for-21 (.714) shooting from the field and went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Gonzalez, who also had four rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal, had the highest scoring output of any Mercer player this season and the 34 points were the second-most of any SoCon player this season.
 
Mercer (6-11, 2-2 SoCon) hosts Samford (10-9, 4-0 SoCon) on Saturday, Jan. 21.
