Furman’s Wilfong and Robertson sweep first awards of the season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Foster Wilfong and Abigail Robertson have been named the Southern Conference men’s and women’s cross country runners of the week, respectively, after all competition Sept. 2-6.

Wilfong finished second at the Eye Opener XC Festival in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on Friday. The sophomore from Boerne, Texas, turned in a personal-best time of 25:04.4 over the 8K course, pacing four Paladins in the top six and helping the squad to the team win with 29 points. Wilfong’s time leads the SoCon after the first weekend of action by 1.1 seconds over teammate Mac Roberts. Furman’s men’s team is ranked No. 20 nationally in the USTFCCCA preseason poll.

Robertson led the Furman women to a 1-7 individual sweep and the team title with a perfect score at the Eye Opener XC Festival on Friday. The senior from Marietta, Georgia, turned in a time of 17:49.7 over the 5K course for her first career win, besting runner-up and teammate Emily Little by three seconds. Her time was the best in the SoCon over the season-opening weekend of action. Furman’s women’s team is just outside the national top 30 in the USTFCCCA preseason poll.
