Women’s soccer players of the week announced

Western Carolina’s Marcil and The Citadel’s Laws honored

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina sophomore forward/midfielder Naya Marcil and The Citadel freshman goalkeeper Grace Laws have been named the Southern Conference women’s soccer offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition from Aug. 30-Sept. 5.

Marcil started in the Catamounts’ 3-1 victory, the first win of the season for Western Carolina, on Sept. 1 over UNC Asheville. She logged two assists and two shots on goal in the contest. Marcil’s first assist came in the game’s 52nd minute as she had a shot on goal that was blocked at the 51:28 mark, but 14 seconds later Rea Syska scored off a feed from Marcil to make the score 1-0. The Quebec, Canada, native got her second assist of the match 18 minutes later when she fed Maggie Lloyd for the game-winning goal to put Western Carolina up 2-1. The Catamounts scored their insurance goal in the 77th minute of the contest.

Laws played all 180 minutes inside the net for The Citadel in its two games last week. The Bulldogs went 2-0, winning 3-0 versus USC Upstate on Sept. 2 and 4-2 at Presbyterian on Sept. 4. The Asheville, North Carolina., native had a season-high four saves and captured the first shutout of her Bulldog career in the game against USC Upstate. In the contest with Presbyterian, Laws had another three saves. The games were also the first two starts of the season for Laws.

Western Carolina (1-1-3) travels to the state of Virginia for a pair of games this week as they take on Longwood on Thursday, Sept. 8, and Radford on Saturday, Sept. 10. The Citadel (3-2-0) will head to Florida for their next two games. The Bulldogs face Stetson on Thursday, Sept. 8, and Jacksonville on Saturday, Sept. 10.
