SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer’s Camilla Jarvela has been selected as the Southern Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week for all competition to this point in the fall. The selection, Jarvela’s first of her career and the first one of the 2022-23 campaign, is made by the league office.
Jarvela led the Bears in Mercer’s season-opening debut at Tulane’s Green Wave Fall Classic in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Monday, Sept. 12, and Tuesday, Sept. 13, shooting an 8-under-par 208 over the course of the two-day tournament to pace the Bears with a seventh-place finish in the 81-golfer field. The junior opened the tournament Monday with an even-par 72 before posting a sub-70 round in the second with a 3-under 69 to sit tied for 15th at 3-under-par entering the final round. The Espoo, Finland, native posted another sub-70 round on Tuesday, shooting a 5-under 67 in the final round to finish only six shots behind individual medalist Kelli Strand of Nebraska and one shot behind Strand’s teammate, Megan Whittaker. Jarvela averaged 69.33 strokes through three rounds and finished with 38 pars and 12 birdies throughout the tournament.
Mercer finished seventh in the 14-team field, completing the tournament with a 1-under 863 performance. The Bears shot 296 in the first round, 280 in the second, and 287 in the final round, earning wins over Central Arkansas (+5), Sam Houston (+6), Seattle (+17), and conference opponent Chattanooga (+21). LSU clinched the tournament title with 832, followed by Nebraska at 835 and Tulsa at 838.
The Bears return to action on Sept. 19-20, competing in Tennessee’s Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate at the Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Also nominated: Hollie Muse (ETSU), Sarah-Eve Rheaume (Furman), Dorota Zalewska (Chattanooga), Elizabeth Lohbauer (Western Carolina) and Xuan Khue Minh Doan (Wofford).
