ETSU's Martin named Student-Athlete of the Week

Totaled a school-record 23 tackles in the Bucs’ 20-17 setback at The Citadel

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU football player Chandler Martin has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from Sept. 7-13. The selection is made by the conference office.

Martin recorded a career-high and school-record 23 tackles in the Bucs’ 20-17 loss to The Citadel on Saturday, Sept. 10, breaking a nearly 30-year-old record of 22 held by Nakia Thomas, set in 1993 against Appalachian State. The redshirt freshman linebacker, who entered the contest with 13 career tackles, registered six stops in the first quarter and seven each in the second and third quarters before finishing with three in the final period. Martin’s 23 tackles are the most by a SoCon player since Western Carolina’s Rock Williams totaled 24 at The Citadel on Oct. 13, 2012, and are tied for the most by a Division I player – FCS and FBS – this season.

Martin was also named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

The Lithonia, Georgia, native maintains a 3.32 grade point average and is majoring in marketing and analytics.

ETSU returns home to Johnson City, Tennessee, on Saturday, Sept. 17, to take on Furman at 7:30 p.m.

Also nominated for Student-Athlete of the Week: Neiva Gaither (Furman women’s soccer), Dorota Zalewska (Chattanooga women’s golf), Kate Wonus (Samford volleyball) and Millie Loehr (Wofford volleyball).
