Women’s soccer players of the week announced

Mercer’s Cook and Samford’s McAslan honored

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer junior forward Kendall Cook and Samford senior goalkeeper Morgan McAslan have been named the Southern Conference women’s soccer offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition from Sept. 6-12. This is the second time that each student-athlete has been named player of the week this season.

Cook started both games for Mercer last week as the Bears went 1-0-1. She had a hat trick in a 9-0 win against South Carolina State on Sept. 9 and scored another goal on Sept. 11 in a 2-2 tie versus Georgia State. Cook scored her first goal against S.C. State 10 minutes into the contest to make the score 1-0. The Alpharetta, Georgia, native scored her next goal of the game in the 19th minute off an assist from Ciara Whitely, and she completed the hat trick in the 47th minute to put the team ahead 6-0. Against Georgia State, Cook scored her goal in the 83rd minute to tie the score at 2-2. Following this past weekend’s performance, Cook is now the SoCon leader in goals (6), points (15) and shots (29).

McAslan played all 180 minutes inside the net for Samford in its two games last week. The Bulldogs dropped a match at UAB, 1-0, on Sept. 8 and tied 14th-ranked Auburn 1-1 on Sept. 11. The Waterdown, Canada, native had her best game of the weekend against Auburn as she had five saves during the game. After four weeks of play, McAslan leads the conference in shutouts with three.
