Women’s soccer players of the week announced

Mercer’s Moorman and Samford’s McAslan honored

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer freshman forward Jada Moorman and Samford graduate student goalkeeper Morgan McAslan have been named the Southern Conference women’s soccer offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition from Aug. 23-29.

Moorman served as a reserve in both games for Mercer last week as the Bears won each contest. She logged two goals, including the game-winning score, in the Bears’ 4-1 victory over the College of Charleston on Aug. 26 and in a 4-1 win over Stetson on Aug. 28, Moorman scored another goal. In the win against the Cougars, she scored her first goal of the game, and her career, in the 24th minute off an assist by preseason all-conference team member Kylie Buchanan. Her second goal of that game came five minutes later. Against Stetson, the Cincinnati, Ohio, native scored a goal in the 65th minute.

McAslan played all 180 minutes inside the net for Samford’s two games last week. The Bulldogs went 1-0-1, winning 4-1 versus Murray State on Aug. 25 and tying 12th-ranked Ole Miss 0-0 on Aug. 28. The Waterdown, Canada, native had a season-high eight saves in the game against Murray State. In the contest with Ole Miss, McAslan grabbed her third shutout of the season as she had two saves. In 2018, McAslan spent her freshman campaign as a member of the Rebels’ women’s soccer team.

Mercer (3-0-1) will travel to play Troy on Thursday, Sept. 1, and will host North Florida on Sunday, Sept. 4. Samford (3-0-1) hosts Army on Thursday, Sept. 1, and will play a neutral-site game against 21st-ranked West Virginia in Auburn, Alabama, on Sunday, Sept. 4.
