Greenville S.C. – Eight Paladins found the back of the net to help Furman cruise past Bob Jones, 9-0, in non-conference women’s soccer action before a crowd of 884 on Tuesday evening at Stone Stadium.
 
“I was pleased that we took care of business early tonight and that we had so many kids get on the score sheet,” said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr, who saw his squad net nine goals for the first time since a 9-0 triumph over Chattanooga on October 19, 2014. “Each time we play is an opportunity for us to get better and improve our team chemistry as we approach Southern Conference play.”
 
Furman opened the scoring just 3:24 into the match when sophomore Helen Gutierrez drove a header past Bob Jones goalkeeper Bekah Shoop from the top of the six-yard box off Cambelle Roberson’s corner kick. Sophomore Valentina Mosquera doubled the margin in the 19^th minute with her second goal as a Paladin. After winning the ball in the midfield, the Mt. Pleasant, S.C., native unleashed a 3-yard strike inside the upper left-hand corner at the 18:51 mark.
 
Less than two minutes later, sophomore Ashlyn Goila extended the lead to 3-0 on her second tally of the campaign. Nieva Gaither played a low cross from the left that Stella Garcia backheeled into the path of Goila who lined a one-timer past Shoop at the 20:26 mark.
 
In the 25^th minute, Maggie Miller’s free kick to the top of the box was headed behind the Bruin defense by Garcia and senior Julia Nicholas volleyed home a shot for her second score of the season to hand the Paladins a 4-0 halftime advantage.
 
Garcia opened the second half with a pair of goals, her third and fourth of the season, just 26 seconds apart. The Wade Hampton High School product rose above the defense to head in a corner kick from fellow Wade Hampton High product Cambeller Roberson at the 57:07 mark before cleaning up a rebound off a Gaither strike at 57:33.
 
Sophomore Madison Luckett recorded her first goal of 2022 in the 83^rd minute. Goila laced a shot off the crossbar that Luckett tucked away inside the left post on a left-footed shot at 82:51. Senior Riley Parsons got in on the scoring action at 86:07 with a driving shot from the top of the 18-yard box to the far-left corner of the net.
 
Freshman Michaela Fisher capped the rout with 37 seconds remaining with a strike from the right side of the box on a pass from Hayley Foster. The goal marked the first of the season for Fisher.
 
Furman boasted a 40-3 margin in total shots and an 18-1 edge in shot on goal. Addison Corne made one save in the 45 minutes of action to earn the victory, while Bob Jones’ Shoop stopped six shots in a losing effort.
 
The Paladins (3-2-0) return to action on Sunday when they face fourth-ranked South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
