SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Six Southern Conference baseball student-athletes were taken in the MLB Draft on Monday, the second day of the draft.
 
Mercer’s Colby Thomas, Collin Price and Bill Knight, UNCG’s Alex Hoppe and Hogan Windish and Western Carolina’s Zebby Matthews were all selected between the third and 10th rounds.
 
Mercer’s Thomas was the first SoCon player off the board this season, with the outfielder going in the third round with the 95th overall pick to the Oakland A’s.
 
UNCG right-hander Hoppe, the consensus SoCon Pitcher of the Year, followed in the sixth round with the 189th overall pick, as he was selected by the Boston Red Sox. Mercer’s Price, a catcher, was taken four picks later by the Houston Astros.
 
UNCG second baseman Windish was next off the board, as the league coaches’ SoCon Player of the Year was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the seventh round with the 216th overall pick.
 
Western Carolina right-handed pitcher Matthews was picked by the Minnesota Twins in the eighth round with the 234th overall selection, while outfielder Knight made it a trio of Bears selected on day two when the Mariners took him in the 10th round with the 306th overall pick.
